How coffee is grown and harvested

Coffee production is a very complex and lengthy process, which can be compared to the lengthy process of growing grapes for wine.

Before you taste any item from 25 Coffee Roasters — this whole story begins with a small seed, through which coffee trees reproduce.


For 40 days, seeds cleared of pulp are grown in sterile soil, then planted in bags and sent to the outdoors. Young coffee trees spend approximately 10 months in this state, sheltered from sunlight and rain, as they need to adapt to the climate. Only after this time, the coffee trees are planted in permanent soil.

Special conditions are required for quality and tasty coffee: suitable climate and altitude, quality tree care, fertile soils. Therefore, areas with volcanic soil, moderate rainfall, and sunlight are ideal conditions.

Usually, coffee is handpicked because one needs to carefully monitor the ripeness of the berries, which ripen at different times, but some large-scale productions use special equipment for berry picking.

It is important to pick only ripe fruits, as failure to do so may result in overripe berries having a ferment taste, while unripe ones may not fully convey their coffee potential. For the perfect coffee taste, its fruits are harvested over three months, as they ripen unevenly.

Interestingly, a coffee tree yields a harvest only after 6 years of planting.

Just imagine how much time it takes from seed to your aromatic cup of coffee in the morning, but it's worth it :)
